During my time as an art student in higher education, I pursued both lower and higher-level drawing exams through the Karnataka State Board. While dedicating numerous hours to honing my sketching skills, I excelled in pencil art, achieving a first-class grade. I voluntarily discontinued my college studies and diploma courses, even after earning a first-class distinction in Kala Prathama in 1974
My journey in art, coupled with a background in photography within our family business, provided me with a profound understanding of concepts it’s film processing chemistry medium, surface, light and shadow, composition, color theory, rule of third dimensions, and perspective. This diverse knowledge propelled me into becoming a Fine Arts photographer within my neighborhood. The grandeur of Indian art and architecture has greatly influenced my contemporary Fine Arts creations. However, my inspiration doesn't solely stem from my Maharashtrian or Indian roots; it now draws extensively from the natural wonders and heritage sites of the world. The oldest bromide of sleeping Budha a silhouette still hangs in the community hall of Kalburgi in Karnataka. One of my artworks portrays Arab local women embracing Bedouin culture as they prepare homemade bread, while another highlights a Maharashtrian farmer diligently working the fields.
Natural wonders like Ama Dablam, an imposing mountain in Nepal's eastern Himalayan range, the awe-inspiring Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, and the enigmatic Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain in England have left a profound mark on my artistic expression. Within India, heritage sites such as the Kailas Temple of Ellora and the towering Qutub Minar have also left an indelible impact on my work. Unfortunately, life's demands eventually took precedence, and pursuing art became a luxury. In reality, art does not always provide for one's livelihood, and I would not hesitate to advise anyone to practice this craft, for it holds immeasurable value beyond monetary gain.
've always taken a different path, choosing to explore the world of photography outside the confines of traditional academia. From mastering the art of image formation on bromide paper to seamlessly transitioning into the digital age, from retouching negatives to creating digital art on iPads—it's been an incredible journey. A decade ago, Niraja Murthy aptly noted in The Hindu that I was 'breaking the color code.' I've evolved my signature style from noir sketching to classic sepia ink on handmade paper.
